Urban foraging: Edible plants, caring for the environment and creating community

Urban foraging is an idea that has been taken up by many celebrity chefs but for Alexandra Crosby(link is external) and IIaria Vanni(link is external), from the University of Technology Sydney it’s much more. Together they’ve established Mapping Edges(link is external), a transdisciplinary research studio that explores the relationship between plants, people and the urban environment. Their paper Rosemary in roundabouts, lemons over the fence: how to go urban foraging safely, respectfully and cleverly (link is external)was published in The Conversation on October 5th, 2021. Alexandra and Ilaria join Judith on Communication Mixdown to talk about their research, the relationship between people and plants and their best forage experience.

This week we were interviewed by the wonderful Judith Peppard for Communication Mixdown on Melbourne’s radical community radio station 3CR.

The show casts a critical eye on the myriad ways in which we communicate with each other in our increasingly interconnected, multi-media platform world. So, we talked about activism, plants, and ways to be guided by plants to care for our cities.

3CR is a dynamic, community hub that has produced radio since 1976.

The radio station was established in 1976 to provide a voice for those denied access to the mass media, particularly the working classwomenIndigenous people and the many community groups and community issues discriminated against in and by the mass media.
